Jean Nachega is a tenured Associate Professor of Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Microbiology and Epidemiology, at Graduate School of Public Health, Pittsburgh University. Dr Nachega is also an Adjunct Associate Professor of Epidemiology and International Health at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and Professor of Medicine and Director of the Center for Infectious Diseases, at Stellenbosch University, Cape Town, South Africa.
He received his education in Belgium (University of Louvain), UK (London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine), and USA (Johns Hopkins University & Harvard University). He has over 30 years’ experience in patient care, teaching, and designing and implementing HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis studies or programs funded by the US NIH/National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the European EDCTP, and Wellcome Trust).
He has authored more than 185 peer-reviewed publications, including several in top-tier journals such as JAMA, The Lancet, Annals of Internal Medicine, and PloS Medicine. He is a lead HIV Investigator within AIDS Clinical Trial Group (ACTG) and an ad hoc consultant at the World Health Organization, the US Centers for Disease Control, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Prof. Nachega is a member of the Academy of Sciences of South Africa (ASSAf) and African Academy of Sciences (AAS).
